COP 30 in Belém, Brazil

Four messages to COP 30 from WasteCulture - Draft

Dipl.-Ing.(TU) Werner P. Bauer

The 30th UN Climate Change Conference, will take place in Belém, Brazil, from November 10th to 21st, 2025. It will bring together representatives from politics, science, civil society, and business to discuss measures against climate change. We are hopeful that the final document will be positive and will align with the climate targets set out in the Paris Agreement.

This is a draft for a proposal from the WasteCulture Community. It is open for discussion and will then be released after the 12th of November to the press.

  1.  Up to 50 % of the 1.5 degree target can be achieved with a holistic waste culture.

  2.  It is vital to support President Mukhtar Babayev from Cop 29 with his Declaration on Reducing Methane from Organic Waste (Annex 7).

  3.  Ensure your circular economy activities are based on the two pillars of residual waste management:
    - Do not accept illegal dumping, whether on streets, nor in water, or on dumps.
    - Reduce emissions from sanitary landfills.

  4.  And one idea for the final document: National authorites shall collect and recover all plastic that consumers cannot avoid.
Do you agree? Would you like to contribute another topic?
(please respond by Nov. 12th)

Let’s co-create!

Sincerely yours
Werner Bauer

Hi WasteCulture
In addition to 3: I strongly suggest to refer to the waste hierarchy instead, ideally with mentioning WtE. But if we do not mention the pyramid, there implicitly would be no room left for WtE
And by the way: «Reduction of methane emissions from waste is essential to mitigate climate change.”

Hi,
Perhaps it should be added that open burning is also prohibited? Most of it is burned rather than dumped.
And of course: Do not accept illegal dumping, whether on streets, nor in water, or on dumps

Your four messages on the COP 30 in Belem, Brazil are very hopeful and concrete.
As a waste expert, I agree with your proposal to achieve climate goals through waste culture. While national leadership and a transition to a circular economy based on a market economy are fundamental, I believe a cultural shift toward a sustainable and circular society is far more valuable for transforming human society. I hope COP 30 will serve as an opportunity to overcome the global climate crisis through a revolution in waste culture, rather than through legal measures.

Hi Waste Culture,
I totally support your proposal.
Waste dumps are a total disaster for the planet. We need to phase them out and replace with proper engineered landfill sites with proper methane management systems.
I also think that all consumer products should have a clear, locally defined route for recycling. If this doesn’t exist then the product should not be allowed. That seems to be the only way to make a circular economy work.
Best wishes
Chris
