The Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment, today elected Ambassador Julio Cordano, of Chile, as the next INC Chair during the third part of the fifth session (INC-5.3).

On October 1–2, ABREN’s President Yuri Schmitke took part in the international event “Exploring Opportunities for Methane Mitigation Convergence between the EU and LAC”, held during the X OLADE Energy Week in Santiago, Chile.

The 2018 bi-Annual EEC/WTERT conference was held this year at The City College of New York hosted by The Earth Engineering Center at City College (EEC|CCNY). The conference brought together the best minds in academia, industry, and government representing 12 countries across five continents to discuss important current topics in waste.

WTERT Chile is expanding as a Consortium of Universities that includes Universidad del Desarrollo (Prof. Alex Godoy, head), Universidad de Santiago (Prof. Luis Diaz), Universidad de La Frontera (Prof. Rodrigo Navia) and Universidad Andrés Bello (Prof. Edmundo Muñoz) and WTERT Chile will include waste Management companies in Chile. One of them is WTE-Araucania.

The world today committed to a pollution-free planet at the close of the UN Environment Assembly in Nairobi, with resolutions and pledges promising to improve the lives of billions across the globe by cleaning up our air, land and water.

Economic development and rapid growth of urban population have resulted in the generation of enormous quantities of municipal solid waste (MSW) that cannot, any longer, be disposed of in the makeshift landfills of yesteryear. This has led the E.U., U.S. and other developed nations to adopt the so-called hierarchy of waste management that gives priority to waste reduction, recycling, composting and waste-to-energy (WTE) over landfilling. Sanitary landfills protect surface and groundwater and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to the atmosphere so they are preferable to non-regulated landfills. However, it has been estimated that only twenty percent of the global landfills are sanitary.

Using a comparative approach, the study reviews trends in waste dumping across 12 South American countries, alongside a historical and regulatory analysis of Germany’s transformation.

This Outlook can help decision-makers understand the direction in which we are heading and help to assess which policies can support a more circular economy. The OECD stands ready to assist governments in making this transition by designing, developing and delivering better resource efficiency policies for better lives.

A detailed analysis of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) management in the Metropolitan Region of Santiago de Chile has been carried out within the framework of a research initiative of the German Helmholtz-Association.

Through the experiences of different countries, notably Chile, Haiti and Brazil, the using of the Mechanical Biological Treatment of residues was projected involving a series of components directed to the development and improvement of the life quality for the populations. The application of the MBT, as a solution for a parcel of the urban residues, is carried through by technical and holistic elements, where the economic, social and environmental aspects are equated in an integrated proposal of handling and treatment. The concept of valuation of residues is extended to beyond the productive activities, including pedagogical activities, territorial organization, environmental protection and social inclusion.
