Practices of municipal solid waste (MSW) management vary based on related rules and regulations of the countries as well as their dedication to attaining sustainable waste management. Most of the developing countries suffer from lack of optimal MSW management which cause environmental problems and economic losses whereas in many developed countries better management of MSW brings environmental and economic benefits.

The current global production of plastics is over 300 million tons, 20% of which is produced in China. It has been estimated that about 90% of the discarded plastics are not recycled. China was the world’s leading importer of waste plastics, while since January 1, 2018, China’s import ban on waste plastics has been put into force, which has had a far-reaching effect on global plastic production and solid waste management.

The 2018 bi-Annual EEC/WTERT conference was held this year at The City College of New York hosted by The Earth Engineering Center at City College (EEC|CCNY). The conference brought together the best minds in academia, industry, and government representing 12 countries across five continents to discuss important current topics in waste.

In the past year, WtERT-China organized the 2018 WTE training workshop for developing countries and participated in the Bi-annual WTERT meeting in New York City and made a presentation of the “WTE progress in China”. In the years since Deng Xiaoping’s policy of reform and opening was introduced in 1978, the People’s Republic of China has undergone an unparalleled transformation. In just a few decades, China has developed from a centrally planned economy with relatively low GDP into a global economic superpower. Even though the growth rates of recent years – 7 % in 2015 and 8 % in 2016 – have tapered off slightly, the long-term trend curve showing the absolute change in gross domestic product continues to point upward to this day.

China remained the most largest energy consumer of the world since overtaking the United States for the first time in 2007, which is due to the rapid development of national economy in recent years. Figure 1 shows the changes of the primary energy consumption of China, the US and the world in the last ten years. It is found that the primary energy consumption of China increased by 38.8 % from 2,361.4 to 3,278.2 million tonnes oil equivalent during 2008-2017. In 2017, China accounted for 24.3 % of global energy consumption. It is a consensus that energy is absolutely the lifeblood of national economy. Fossil fuels not only provides essential power for industrial development but also bring serious environmental pollution. Nowadays, there are two major contradictions concerning energy and environment as shown in Figure 2.
