New book on modern WTE technology and some of its applications around the world by Dr. Efstatios Kalogirou, member of the Global WtERT Council and co-founder of WtERT-Greece. It discusses thermal treatment technologies, including combustion, novel gasification, plasma gasification, and pyrolysis. Furthermore it offers 35 real-world international case studies from the Americas, Asia, Europe, as well as Africa and provides different approaches for different geographic areas.

Bioenergy has received much attention for its potential to meet growing energy demands and mitigate climate change, poverty and the world’s dependence on expensive, diminishing and insecure imported oil supplies. However, with these potential benefits come many potential environmental problems. The benefits, problems and environmental risks associated with bioenergy are most evident in developing countries. These countries also are more vulnerable to food shortages and environmental impacts, including climate change.

The main purpose of this study is to measure the GHG emission reduction from the landfill through scavenging and distribution methane gas as alternative energy.

In cooperation of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and KSB AG currently innovative concepts for using pumps as turbines for exploitation of drinking water are developed as a part of the German-Indonesian jointproject “Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) Indonesia” funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Thus, pumps will be operated inversely to use the hydropower potential as lowcost alternative to conventional turbines. Besides low investment costs, they are characterized by robust designs and low operational and maintenance costs. Additionally, by coupling a pump running as turbine directly to a normal operating pump such an aggregate can deliver water without the need of electrical power at all. This paper discusses theoretically attainable efficiencies of such coupled modules related to different technical designs and different pump and turbine heads, to give a more general overview for very different hydraulic conditions. Main focus is the robustness and simplicity and its implication on attainable efficiency and, especially, if usage of any kind of gearboxes between pump and ‘pump as turbine’ is reasonable.

The City of Yogyakarta, located on the slope of Merapi Volcano in Indonesia, sufferred from water scarcity. The water table has declined up to 3 m in 2001–2008. The annual rainfall of 2000 mm, is inadequate to supply the population for domestic water demand only. Eighty per cent of population use dugwells as their domestic water sources. The soil underlying the City is adequately permeable to allow the rain water to recharge the groundwater. However, the population is high, and so the demand for water. The deeper groundwater has also been abstracted before adequate recharge effort is applied. The City is sloping down from north to south on the landforms of foot slope, foot plain, and alluvial plain; intersected by 5 rivers; Bedog, Winongo, Code, Gajahwong and Tambakbayan. This situation devides the City into 12 hydrology unit areas, which are independent to each other. Most of the areas, even in the rainy season, are critical, in which the water demand exceeds the water supply from rainfall.

Organic waste material is used to return nutrients to soil to preserve and improve soil fertility. Several studies indicate that agricultural activities are contributors to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (Denman et al., 2007; USEPA, 2011). Release of Methane, Carbon dioxide and Nitrous oxide was measured from soil application of organic residues (“empty fruit bunch” (EFB), “fiber” and “shell”) on palm oil plantations in Indonesia using a flux chamber and a photoacoustic field gas monitor (INNOVA 1412-5). The results show that the application of organic residues onto soil resulting in the release of GHGs.

How Plastic Waste is Burned in Indonesian Tofu Factories

On October 26th, the 5th International Training Workshop of Waste to Energy hosted by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China and jointly organized by Zhejiang University host of WtERT-China and Zhejiang University of Technology was held online and concluded successfully.

The largely unregulated waste management poses grave problems in many Asian cities. The need to organize waste management systematically and communicate this to people requires a lot of awareness training, good networking, a clear focus on results and a great deal of patience. Key individuals on all levels must be involved in order to increase acceptance among the population. The Technologie-Transfer-Zentrum, ttz (Technology Transfer Centre, ttz) in Bremerhaven, Germany, is aiming to develop and locally implement a realizable model with 21 partners from Europe and Asia, within the EU project ISSOWAMA (Integrated Sustainable Solid Waste Management in Asia). The project was officially launched in Bangkok on February 11 and 12.

This article explores the process and substance of the Copenhagen climate talks in December, 2009, and what they may mean for the future of the climate change regime. The negotiations are considered in their historical context. The substance is assessed against the mandate for the negotiations set in Bali, Indonesia in 2007. The negotiating dynamics are explored by assessing the role of each of the key players. The path forward from Copenhagen under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is considered in light of the substantive outcome and the effect of the Copenhagen talks on the negotiating dynamics. The article concludes by briefly exploring some alternatives to the current approach to climate change under the UNFCCC.

The importance of forests in regulating the global climate, particularly as a store and sink of carbon, is widely recognised. Forest protection as a climate mitigation measure has been acknowledged at the international level, and has been an important element of UNFCCC discussions since its inclusion in the Bali Action Plan at the 13th Conference of the Parties in Bali, Indonesia in 2007 (COP 13).3 The REDD debate has developed into its current form, REDD plus,4 which also includes sustainable forest management, conservation and enhancement of carbon stocks in the suite of actions that may be eligible for international funding.

Industrial sludge waste disposal receives increasing attention and the Indonesian legislation concerning the discharge of industrial sludge waste as landfill is very strict.

For many years, the relationship between international trade and environmental rules has been on the agenda of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and elsewhere. In a few celebrated decisions, discussed below, the WTO Appellate Body has interpreted several of the WTO provisions that apply to this interface. Nonetheless, a number of issues remain unresolved. The current momentum behind climate change policy-making will likely bring into sharper focus the potential clashes and synergies with international trade law, especially since unlike most other environmental problems, climate change is a global phenomenon.

Stability of landfills is one of the major geotechnical tasks in landfill design and operation. The knowledge about waste mechanics has significantly improved over the last decade. In Germany several large research projects have been conducted. In 1997, German Geotechnical Society released a technical recommendation reflecting the state of art in stability analysis. However, there are still open questions particularly about the influence of regional parameters such as tropical climate conditions, but also about variations in landfill operation and waste composition.

Positive moments in international climate diplomacy generally do not last very long. On 18 November 2004, Russia finally completed its ratification of the Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). In accordance with Article 25.1, Russia’s ratification was the last one needed for the Protocol to enter into force, which took place amid worldwide celebrations on 16 February 2005.

The urban areas in western Java alone generate 55 000 tons of solid waste per day. Waste disposal is among the worst in the Asia region. Only 50 – 60 % is collected, and most landfill sites are open dumps. Service is worse in poor areas, where most waste is dumped in canals or vacant lots, or burned. Poor solid waste management degrades local water ways and is the largest source of particulate air pollution in urban areas. It is a major contributor to respiratory ailments, diseases such as Dengue Fever, and localized flooding.

The use of biomass for combined heat and power (CHP) production becomes increasingly important. On the one hand it substitutes the usage of fossil fuels like coal, oil or natural gas; on the other hand it is neutral regarding the CO2-emissions into the atmosphere. That is the reason why many countries, especially the EU and the USA have launched very ambitious programs for increasing the usage of biomass, especially for power production.
