Urbanization which has been taking place for decades in Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), Thailand, showed a rapid increment of the number population in the area since 1947. About 45 percent of BMA land area is urbanized area. Corresponding to the urbanization in BMA area, analysis stability of mean which is conducted shows an increasing trend of daily, monthly, and annual rainfall in the area during 1969 up to 2007. The increasing rate which is observed in three rainfall stations is varied from 6 up to 20 percent. This condition is strongly related to increasing annual total wet day (PRCPTOT), increasing annual number of consecutive wet days (CWD) and decreasing annual number of dry days (CDD) which is analyzed using Mann Kendall’s test. The superimposition of isohyets of monthly rainfall and monthly electricity use in the area shows that the highest rainfall did not fall in the area with the highest electricity use.

The disposal of municipal solid waste (MSW) has become an important issue in all countries. However, it is usually hard for governments of developing nations to deal with MSW management issues because of lack of information and adequate data collection.

This article presents an evaluation of the potential of MSW incineration for climate change mitigation and promotion of biomass-based electricity production in a more sustainable direction in Thailand. Results show that MSW incineration has the ability to lessen environmental impact associated with waste disposal

The largely unregulated waste management poses grave problems in many Asian cities. The need to organize waste management systematically and communicate this to people requires a lot of awareness training, good networking, a clear focus on results and a great deal of patience. Key individuals on all levels must be involved in order to increase acceptance among the population. The Technologie-Transfer-Zentrum, ttz (Technology Transfer Centre, ttz) in Bremerhaven, Germany, is aiming to develop and locally implement a realizable model with 21 partners from Europe and Asia, within the EU project ISSOWAMA (Integrated Sustainable Solid Waste Management in Asia). The project was officially launched in Bangkok on February 11 and 12.

This exciting initiative, led by ECOLOGICON GmbH and Stiftung GRS Batterien. Funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety BATTPRO focuses on developing sustainable systems for collecting and recycling household and lithium-ion batteries in Cambodia and Thailand.

Waste is an issue in every country of the world. Wastes are generated by activities in all economic sectors and are generally regarded as an unavoidable by-product of economical activities. Rapid growth of population and industrialization degrades the urban environment and possesses serious stress on natural resources. This in turn undermines equitable and sustainable development. Inefficient management and disposal of solid waste is an obvious cause of degradation of the environment in most cities of the developed and developing world.

Septage is characterized by a high solid and organic content, large quantities of grit and grease, a great capacity to foam upon agitation, and poor settling and dewatering characteristics.

In Thailand, many fresh-cut vegetable producer companies had emerged due to the demand of customer and this also leads to high amount of vegetable residues which come from the cleaning and processing stages.

Lamphun city in northern Thailand is annually faced with serious air pollution problem during winter to summer period due to open burning of agricultural waste and household solid waste. The promising way of attenuating this problem is to educate and convince people to change their habit from making an open burning of biowaste to another practice.

The assessment and selection of waste management strategies is one of the most fundamental tasks in waste management. The complexity of waste management systems has been increasing worldwide, since material and resource aspects as well as closed loop material flows are becoming more and more important. Growing interrelationships between disposal, recycling and production processes result in complex networks of waste treatment. Material Flow Analysis (MFA) is a systematic assessment of the flows of materials within a system defined in space and time. Brunner P. and Rechberger H. (2004) published a methodology for the assessment of waste treatment processes based on the analysis of material flows. Only an exact accounting of all substance flows allows one to determine the final sinks (or the whereabouts) of the “goods” in these processes.

Landfill and incineration are the most common solid treatment methods that are currently employed in both developed and developing countries. Percentage of employing these methods depends on environmental policies of the country or municipal region. In Japan, almost 80% of solid waste is treated by incineration, MOE (2006). On the other hand, 30% of total solid waste in Thailand is treated by sanitary landfill and others while the rest by burning or abandoning in open-area, PCD (2002). Many other countries are also facing the problems on high treatment cost, space availability, and causative environmental problems since the waste amount has been increasing rapidly especially in this decade due to accelerated economic growth.

In early 1999, the Solid Waste Management Project for the Phitsanulok Municipality was started. The main focus of the first phase of the technical assistance project between the Municipality of Phitsanulok and the German Agency for Technical Cooperation (GTZ) (1999- 2002) was to develop a model for a sustainable solid waste management system for the city in cooperation with the municipal administration, citizens and the private sector (Kassmann, 2005).

The current urban waste generation from several countries in Asia is increasing along with the rapid growth of population and industrialization (Visvanathan et al., 2004). Most Asian countries are facing the accelerated problems of inadequate MSW collection, transportation and disposal sites. This eventually create burden to the environment, especially open dumping is the most common MSW disposal in developing countries. In Thailand and India, for example, 70-90% of final disposal sites are open dumps (Visvanathan et al., 2003). Conventional landfills are popular because it is economical and convenient method of solid waste disposal. Generally, it is referred as the “dry-tomb method”.

Biological treatment of organic waste comprises two types: aerobic composting and anaerobic digestion, depending on the type of microorganism that converts the organic mass. Worldwide, composting is more frequently applied than digestion. Both processes replicate the natural degradation of biodegradable materials. The situation regarding biological treatment is significantly different between Europe and Asia in terms of substrates and technologies. The terms used for describing the biological treatment options are not always consistent between European and Asian professionals either.

This paper explores the possibilities of using basic mechanical pre-treatment principals band Landfill mining approach to recover the discarded plastics from Nonthaburi solid waste disposal site in Thailand. The excavated wastes from the dumpsite were characterized for their physical composition and chemical characteristics according to their disposal age. The composition of solid waste excavated from the site showed high plastic wastes content (25 to 45%) of total weight.

SUMMARY: The aim of the here presented project is to carry out a “Study on Solar and Biomass Energy Potential and Feasibility” in Lao PDR and Thailand including RE strategies on technology implementation, project dimensioning and design, urban energy supply, financing procedures and legislation.

But management of it is a huge task, which depends upon successful programs for recycling and reuse; providing safe and effective waste collection and disposal; availability of sustainable financing and effective contribution from policy makers, the public and civil society.

SUMMARY: The composting of pig manure mixed with soy hull in the mixture ratio of 1:1, 2:1, 3:1, and 5:1 (dry weight basis) were studied. The experiments were conducted in perforated plywood composting boxes with total 120 days of the experimental period.
