Established in 1990, Kosovo [1] is one of the newest countries in the world located in South-East Europe, part of Western Balkans, with a surface coverage area of 10,907 km2, a population of 1, 883, 018 [2] and a population density of 166 inhabitants/km2.

Management of the sanitary landfills represents one of the main challenges of the waste sector in Kosovo. At present, around 70% of the waste is disposed in sanitary landfills under semi-anaerobic conditions without gas collections. Non-adequate management of the sanitary landfills is a common practice of the waste management in the country.

This paper deals with estimation of methane emissions from the Mirash municipal solid waste sanitary landfill. Methane emission was calculated according to two different methodologies, namely, IPCC 2006 and LandGEM.

Scrap for recycling is Kosovo’s number one export. It is a 40-million-euro industry built on the backs of exploited minorities and children.

The paper presents an estimation of methane emission from deposited municipal solid waste in Sferka landfill for the years 2006–2016 and and projections of methane emissions for the time period 2017-2022.

The purpose of this report is to provide a strong and comprehensive knowledge base on waste management in Kosovo, with focus on municipal waste. The key data provided per municipality and region, provide a clear understanding of the current situation, the trends and their implications, and future plans.

In its current phase (04/2014 - 12/2016), the Sustainable Municipal Services (SMS) program of the German Development Cooperation (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit – GIZ) in Kosovo has the potential to provide in the medium term basic public services in the waste management sector for 70% of the population. Such an achievement would be to a large extent dependent on the success and development of an incentive-based competition in 17 selected municipalities (out of a total of 38 ), which was set up by the MESP in cooperation with the German Development Bank (Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau – KfW). Responsible municipal bodies get access to investments provided that they implement reforms for performance development and make improvements in selected performance indicators. The latter aims at a financially sustainable expansion of services.

Republic of Serbia is a West Balkan country, situtated in the South-east Europe at the crossroads between Western and Central Europe and the Near East. European road corridor No. 10 and navigable inland corridor No. 7 transverse Serbia. Territory of 88.361 square kilometers consists of two autonomous provincies - Vojvodina (21.506 km2) and Kosovo and Metohija (11.000 km2) – and Central part of Serbia (56 000 km2). Population in Serbia is app. 8.5 million inhabitants; the capital and the biggest city is Belgrade (1.6 million). There are 29 Districts/Regions in Serbia and 190 Municipalities.

The German international development agency (GIZ) has awarded a contract to Landbell Group and Black Forest Solutions to advise on the development of a tailormade deposit refund system (DRS) for beverage containers in Kosovo.
