ABREN at the X OLADE Energy Week in Chile

On October 1–2, ABREN’s President Yuri Schmitke took part in the international event “Exploring Opportunities for Methane Mitigation Convergence between the EU and LAC”, held during the X OLADE Energy Week in Santiago, Chile.

ABREN

Key highlights of ABREN’s participation:

  • Presentation of the Brazilian scenario on waste management, outlining challenges and opportunities to cut methane emissions;
  • International success stories, such as China and Germany, in deploying Waste-to-Energy (WtE) technologies;
  • Emphasis on Brazil’s National Solid Waste Plan (PLANARES), which foresees by 2040 the implementation of 994 MW in WtE, 252 MW in landfill biogas, and 69 MW in anaerobic digestion biogas – targets that are still pending real progress;
  • Advocacy for the approval of Bill 3.311/2025 – National Methane Zero Program, now under Senate review, which can unlock new WtE plants in Brazil while drastically cutting methane emissions.

As highlighted by Schmitke, from 2005 to 2020 Brazil experienced a 52% increase in methane emissions from solid waste disposal – underscoring the urgency of advancing robust and innovative public policies.

The debate gathered representatives from the European Commission, SEI, the Global Methane Hub, Carbon Mapper, Latin American governments, and research centers to discuss:

Opportunities for regulatory cooperation between the EU and LAC;

Strengthening monitoring systems;

Strategies to mobilize investments;

Practical steps to align climate policies and accelerate the energy transition.

ABREN reaffirms its role as a strategic voice for advancing waste sector decarbonization, ensuring that Brazil and the region turn challenges into opportunities for a cleaner, more sustainable, and innovative future.
