New Study Highlights the Profitability and Climate Benefits of Waste-to-Energy in Jordan!

"This important study presents the first comprehensive techno-economic and life cycle assessment (LCA) of organic waste incineration in Jordan, analyzing agricultural residues, animal manure, and municipal organics to evaluate their potential for clean energy generation.

This study provides the first comprehensive techno-economic and life cycle assessment (LCA) of incinerating Jordan’s organic waste, including agricultural residues, animal manure, and municipal organics, to produce clean energy.

Key Findings:
1/ Jordan generates over 1.8 million tons/year of combustible organic waste, representing a potential energy yield of 27,600 TJ/year, equivalent to 7% of the nation’s total energy use.
2/ Using a medium-scale incineration model, the analysis found a net annual benefit of 18% of the capital cost, with a payback period of only 6.5 years, confirming that incineration is economically profitable under Jordanian conditions.
3/ Life Cycle Assessment results reveal that incineration with energy recovery drastically cuts greenhouse gas emissions, achieving only 0.57 kg COâ‚‚-eq/kWh for animal waste and 0.015 kg COâ‚‚-eq/kWh for wood trimmings, compared to 9.15 kg COâ‚‚-eq/kWh from landfilling.

The study concludes that energy recovery from organic waste is both financially viable and environmentally superior, positioning Waste-to-Energy (WtE) as a strategic pillar for Jordan’s energy security and climate goals.
