WasteCulture and ABREN – the Brazilian Association of Energy from Waste – announce a new strategic partnership that further strengthens the long-standing cooperation between Germany and Brazil in the fields of waste-to-energy, biogas and biomethane. The initiative establishes a structured platform for collaboration focused on innovation, knowledge exchange and the development of sustainable waste management solutions.
The partnership was formalized through a MoU signed between ABREN and WTERT Germany GmbH, represented respectively by Yuri Schmitke, Executive President of ABREN, and Werner P. Bauer, Managing Director of WTERT Germany. The agreement establishes a framework for cooperation and the creation of the "German-Brazil Alliance for Sustainable Waste Management”, designed to promote joint initiatives in technology, regulation and project development in the waste-to-energy, biogas and biomethane sectors.
Under the terms of the agreement, the partners will exchange knowledge and best practices on regulatory frameworks, waste management policies, circular economy strategies and project development. The cooperation will also promote the dissemination of information on the Brazilian waste sector through the WasteCulture platform and support the organization of workshops, webinars, technical studies and international exchange initiatives aimed at accelerating innovation and sustainable resource management.
The collaboration between Yuri Schmitke and Werner Bauer builds on several years of cooperation within the global Waste-to-Energy Research and Technology Council (WTERT) network. Since 2020, both have worked together to expand international dialogue on sustainable waste management. This collaboration intensified significantly in 2023, when Yuri Schmitke joined the Global WTERT Council, strengthening institutional cooperation between WTERT, ABREN and international partners working to advance waste-to-energy solutions worldwide.

A key milestone of this collaboration was the joint initiative between ABREN and WasteCulture during IFAT Germany 2025, the world’s leading trade fair for environmental technologies held in Munich. During the event, both organizations worked together to connect European companies, consultants and technology providers with Brazilian stakeholders interested in developing projects in waste-to-energy, biogas and biomethane. The initiative reinforced the role of IFAT as a strategic meeting point for strengthening transatlantic cooperation in sustainable waste management and energy recovery.
The partnership also seeks to promote international technical exchanges, including study tours, expert forums and collaborative research initiatives designed to accelerate the implementation of advanced waste treatment technologies and climate mitigation solutions.
Werner Bauer highlighted the importance of international cooperation in advancing sustainable waste solutions: "Cooperation across borders is essential to accelerate innovation in sustainable waste management. Through this partnership with ABREN, we aim to connect expertise from Germany and Brazil and foster practical solutions that contribute to the development of circular and climate-friendly waste systems.”
Yuri Schmitke emphasized the strategic relevance of the collaboration for Brazil’s rapidly developing waste-to-energy and renewable gas markets: "Brazil has enormous potential for waste-to-energy, biogas and biomethane. By strengthening cooperation with German partners and international institutions, we can accelerate the adoption of advanced technologies, improve regulatory frameworks and unlock sustainable investments that benefit both the environment and society.”
WasteCulture believes that meaningful progress begins with the exchange of knowledge and ideas. This partnership reflects exactly that spirit of collaboration. Both organizations look forward to a fruitful cooperation that strengthens the connection between Germany and Brazil, inspires innovation and accelerates the development of sustainable waste management solutions—ultimately contributing to a more circular and climate-friendly future.
