Conversion of a lignite-fired power plant into a waste-to-energy plant using the example of the ZMS Schwandorf, Germany
With the establishment of the Zweckverband ZMS Schwandorf 40 years ago and the associated decision to convert the existing lignite-fired power plant into a waste-to-energy plant, approx. 8.25 million tons of CO2 equivalents were saved in the period from 1982 to 2018.

Following are several assignments of the ZMS:
1. Construction of a waste-to-energy plant for the thermal utilization of household and bulky waste as well as waste similar to household waste from industry and trade.
2. Construction and operation of a waste transfer station at the central Schwandorf waste power plant as well as construction and operation of eight waste transfer stations in the association's area.
3. Transport of the waste from the transfer stations of the members of the association to the waste loading station at the waste power plant.
4. Receipt and treatment of additional quantities of waste from members of the association, which are not part of the regular household and bulky waste collection.
